Gabon: Landslide Victory for Brice Oligui Nguema

Gabon’s military leader, Brice Oligui Nguema, has won the presidential election with a landslide victory, securing 90.35% of the votes, according to provisional results from the Interior Ministry. This outcome was widely expected, given his instrumental role in ending the 55-year dynastic rule of the Bongo family.

Nguema’s victory is a key moment in Gabon’s transition following the 2023 military coup that ousted former President Ali Bongo Ondimba. The election was observed by international organizations.

Brigadier General Brice OLIGUI NGUEMA was born on March 3, 1975, in NGOUONI, in the southeastern part of GABON. After completing his primary and secondary studies, he obtained his baccalaureate, series D, with distinction at the Port-Gentil State High School and entered the Royal Academy of Meknès in the Kingdom of Morocco in 1997, where he pursued military and academic training.

He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Legal Sciences and a military diploma as an infantry section leader. His bravery, courage, and work ethic quickly set him apart from others. He was chosen to take on the prestigious role of securing the safety of His Excellency, the late Omar BONGO ONDIMBA. In this new role, he advanced in responsibility until he became the President of the Republic’s aide-de-camp. He spent 8 years alongside the Head of State.

In 2009He was appointed Deputy Commander of the Paratrooper Intervention Group (GIP), a position he held with merit for 5 years. In 2014, his experience and love for the country led him to take on a diplomatic career. He was appointed Military Attaché to the Gabonese High Commission in the Republic of Senegal, with jurisdiction over Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso. He held this position successfully for 5 years.

In 2019, he was recalled to the country and entrusted with the sensitive task of Director-General of Special Services. Then in April 2020, Brigadier General Brice OLIGUI NGUEMA was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Republican Guard. Since August 30, 2023, he has been acting as President of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions, President of the Transition until his election this weekend.

Regarding his military training, Brigadier General Brice OLIGUI NGUEMA, an experienced paratrooper, has held a First Degree Military Higher Education diploma (EMS1) since 2007 and a Second Degree Military Higher Education diploma (EMS2) since 2010.
