Biya-Tchiroma: The Weight of a Disputed Win

President Paul Biya is facing growing post-election resistance as opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary intensifies efforts to contest the October 12 presidential results.

Tchiroma, who claims victory in the disputed poll, has called for three days of nationwide ghost towns to “reveal the true will of the people” to the international community. The call comes after days of protest, some of which turned deadly in cities across Cameroon.

Official results declared Biya the winner with 53.66% of the vote, placing Tchiroma in second position with 35.19%. The ruling CPDM party has condemned the ghost town calls as “anti-republican,” urging citizens to continue their daily routines without disruption.

President Biya, now entering another term, pledged a mandate of “Greatness and Hope” in his post-election message. But analysts warn the escalating standoff with Tchiroma could threaten stability if not resolved through dialogue or legal means.

Tchiroma has vowed to keep up the pressure, insisting he will not relent “until the regime is brought to its knees.
