Cameroon Seeks Proposals to Redraw Administrative Map

Cameroon’s Ministry of Territorial Administration has launched an urgent nationwide exercise to identify areas for the creation of new divisions and subdivisions, in a bid to improve governance and strengthen administrative presence across the country.

In a directive dated December 2, 2025, and signed by Minister Paul Atanga Nji, regional governors were instructed to submit proposals “as a matter of urgency,” outlining specific boundaries and meeting a set of objective criteria.

These include population size, surface area, distance from existing administrative units, economic and cultural activity, availability of infrastructure for immediate use, and security or strategic relevance.

The ministry emphasized the importance of the initiative, describing it as critical for improving territorial planning and strengthening local governance. Cameroon currently has 10 regions and 58 divisions, which are further divided into subdivisions and communes.

The proposed administrative overhaul comes amid ongoing demographic changes and development needs, with authorities aiming to enhance public service delivery and ensure more effective territorial management.
