The Government of The Gambia has confirmed that Issa Tchiroma Bakary, a Cameroonian opposition figure, is currently being hosted in the country. According to an official statement released Sunday, Mr. Bakary arrived on November 7, 2025, and is being offered temporary refuge on humanitarian grounds, amid rising tensions in *post-electoral Cameroon.

The Gambian government emphasized that Bakary’s presence is part of a spirit of African solidarity and aimed at ensuring his safety as regional stakeholders continue diplomatic engagements to ease tensions following Cameroon’s contested presidential elections.
In the statement, the Gambian authorities reiterated their respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African Union member states and assured that the country “will not be used as a base for subversive activity against any state.”
The government further noted that it is coordinating efforts with regional partners, including Nigeria, to encourage a peaceful and negotiated resolution to the crisis. The Gambian public will be kept informed as developments unfold.
