Algeria Recalls Ambassadors and Closes Airspace Over Drone Incursions

Algeria has raised the stakes in its ongoing diplomatic dispute with its southern neighbors by recalling its ambassadors and delaying the appointment of its new envoy to Burkina Faso. This decision comes as tensions escalate over recent accusations that have heightened friction along Algeria’s southern borders.

In an unprecedented move, Algeria has also closed its airspace to all flights traveling to and from Mali. The Algerian Ministry of Defense has released radar data, claiming that a drone violated its airspace near the town of Tin-Zaouatine, marking the third such incident in recent months. This sharp increase in airspace violations has only deepened Algeria’s frustration and anger over what it views as a growing security threat from its neighbors.
