Foiled Coup Attempt in Burkina Faso Linked to Foreign Plotters, Says Security Minister

Authorities in Burkina Faso have announced the foiling of a coup attempt allegedly planned by a group of military officers in collaboration with terrorist elements and external accomplices operating from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The plot, which was scheduled to be executed on April 16, aimed to launch an assault on the Presidency and carry out simultaneous attacks across the country, in an attempt to destabilize the nation and overthrow the administration of Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

In a televised address Monday night, Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana said the government had received credible intelligence from national security services and public whistleblowers, which helped dismantle what he described as a “vast conspiracy.”

“This attempted coup was part of a well-coordinated effort to plunge the country into chaos and seize power by force,” the minister stated, assuring the public that investigations are ongoing and that those involved will be held accountable.

The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions and regional insecurity, as Burkina Faso continues to battle armed insurgent groups across its northern and eastern regions.
