Senegal: Lawmaker Proposes Treason Charges Against Former President Macky Sall

A storm is brewing in Senegal’s political landscape as a lawmaker from the ruling party Pastef has filed a motion in Parliament seeking the prosecution of former President Macky Sall for high treason.

The proposal, submitted by MP Guy Marius Sagna, is based on findings from the Court of Auditors, which allege that Sall’s administration falsified public debt and budget deficit figures. The report points to a hidden debt of $7 billion accumulated during Sall’s presidency from 2012 to 2024.

Sagna argues that these debts were incurred illegally and that the lack of transparency and manipulation of public accounts undermines the country’s financial sovereignty. Given the scale and implications of these actions, he contends they may constitute high treason.
