Although she ‘won’ the election, incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan Faced No Real Opposition Amid Crackdown on Dissent and Media
The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Justice Jacobs Mwambegele, announced Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan as the president of Tanzania, following the country’s 2025 general election. Hassan, representing the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, officially collected her certificate of victory on Saturday.
In her victory speech, Hassan described the decisive win as a clear mandate from the public to implement CCM’s promises. She congratulated other presidential candidates for conducting civil campaigns and called for national unity.
“The 2025 election is now done. It is now time to stand together as a nation,” Hassan said.
She also praised the electoral commission for overseeing a “free, open and fair” election process.Samia secured about 31.9 million votes, or 97.66% of the total, with turnout nearing 87% of the country’s 37.6 million registered voters, the electoral chief said.
