Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has unveiled his autobiography “My Life of Duty and Allegiance” in Abuja, during a high-profile ceremony that brought together senior political leaders, diplomats, military veterans, and traditional rulers from across Africa.
The event, held at the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre, marked nearly six decades since Gowon assumed power in 1966 and was framed by the former leader as an effort to document his experiences and preserve historical memory rather than reopen political divisions.

Gowon stressed that the memoir was not intended to “settle scores or pass judgment on historical actors,” but to correct distortions in public discourse and ensure his version of Nigeria’s history is preserved for future generations.
He recalled taking office at a moment of national crisis, noting that his leadership was defined by efforts to preserve unity during and after the civil war.
“Sixty years ago, our country stood on the brink of disintegration,” he said, adding that the circumstances of the time demanded a renewed commitment to national service.
The ceremony drew a wide range of dignitaries, including former President Goodluck Jonathan; Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu; Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume; and Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represented Senate leadership.
Former military heads of state Generals Abdulsalami Abubakar and Ibrahim Babangida were also present, alongside the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III.
Former Minister of Defence Theophilus Danjuma was represented by former Chief of Defence Staff Martin Agwai, who formally unveiled the book published by Havilah Group.
Among international guests was Dr Christopher Fomunyoh, Senior Associate for Africa at the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Washington, D.C., whose remarks added a deeply personal and continental dimension to the event.
Addressing General Gowon, Dr Fomunyoh described it as a privilege to be present at the celebration of a major African leader, noting both personal emotion and professional admiration.
“Your Excellency, all protocols respected. It’s such an honor to be here to celebrate a great African leader. I am so touched,” he said.
He highlighted his dual identity as a Cameroonian and a representative of the National Democratic Institute, explaining that he had travelled from Washington, D.C. specifically for the occasion.
“I am from the National Democratic Institute in Washington, D.C. I flew here for this event, but I’m also from Cameroon,” he noted.

Dr Fomunyoh referenced historical ties between Nigeria and Cameroon, particularly the relationship between General Gowon and Cameroon’s late President Ahmadou Ahidjo, which he said was acknowledged during the ceremony.
He described the gathering as extending beyond Nigeria, characterizing it as a moment of continental significance.
“This is a unique event, not just for Nigeria, but for our continent, Africa,” he observed.
He further underscored the importance of Africans taking ownership of their historical narrative, commending General Gowon for his contribution to that effort.
“We need to tell our story, and His Excellency, General Dr. Yakubu Gowon, is helping this continent tell its story,” he said.
The emotional highlight of the ceremony came during the proceedings when General Gowon rose from his seat to personally greet Dr Fomunyoh. The two men shared a prolonged handshake that lasted several minutes, even as the next speaker had already begun addressing the audience. The moment drew visible emotion in the room, with observers describing it as a powerful gesture of mutual respect and appreciation for Fomunyoh’s presence and remarks.
The event concluded with tributes from dignitaries who praised Gowon’s legacy in reconciliation and regional diplomacy, particularly his post-war doctrine of “No Victor, No Vanquished,” which remains central to his historical legacy.
