Divorce Between President Faye and Ousmane Sonko Reshapes Senegalese Politics

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the government, marking what observers are calling a political “divorce” between two leaders who once embodied a shared promise of national renewal.

The announcement, made Friday, May 22, 2026, through the presidency, stated that cabinet members will continue handling routine government business until a new administration is formed. No official explanation was immediately provided for the decision.

The split ends a closely watched partnership between President Faye and Ousmane Sonko, both leading figures of the ruling PASTEF movement, which came to power on a platform of institutional reform and anti-establishment change.

Over recent months, political observers had noted rising tensions between Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, with differences increasingly surfacing over governance priorities and executive authority.
While both men had publicly downplayed any institutional crisis, Faye previously acknowledged disagreements and reaffirmed his constitutional prerogative to appoint or dismiss the head of government in the interest of national stability.

Sonko, for his part, had recently floated the idea of “soft cohabitation” between the presidency and the ruling party in the event of political divergence, a statement widely interpreted as a sign of growing distance within the executive.
The dismissal follows a series of public interventions by Sonko on sensitive policy matters, including debates over legislative authority and the management of state funds—issues that exposed diverging approaches within the governing coalition.
Shortly after his removal, Sonko issued a brief message on social media expressing calm acceptance of the decision.

The presidency has not yet named a successor, leaving uncertainty over the next phase of government leadership and raising questions about the future direction of Senegal’s political transition.
The abrupt split between Faye and Sonko marks a turning point in Senegalese politics, closing a chapter on a partnership that had been widely seen as the engine of recent political change.
