Power in banking rarely arrives with spectacle. It moves through decisions taken behind closed doors, through strategy, discipline, and the silent movement of capital that sustains economies.
In Central Africa, one of the steady hands guiding that power is Gwendoline Abunaw, MD of Ecobank Cameroon.
From the bustling economic capital of Douala, Abunaw carries one of the most consequential financial responsibilities in the region. She serves as Managing Director of Ecobank Cameroon and Cluster Head for the Central African Economic and Monetary Community. In this role she oversees operations not only in Cameroon but also across Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, the Central African Republic, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Her leadership reflects the growing sophistication of African banking and the rising influence of women within the highest levels of finance.
Beyond her executive responsibilities, Abunaw plays a central role in shaping the national financial system. She is President of the Association of Credit Institutions of Cameroon, known as APECCAM, where she works with regulators, financial institutions, and policymakers to strengthen the Cameroon’s banking sector.
Her influence extends across several financial institutions. She serves as Chairperson of Ecobank Asset Management, EDC Investment Bank, and the microfinance institution PASL. She is also a board member at Ecobank Cameroon and eProcess International. In addition, she represents Ecobank Transnational Incorporated on the board of Ecobank Chad.
Academic Foundations
Abunaw’s achievements are built upon a solid academic foundation. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Banking and Finance from the University of Buea. She later obtained a Master of Business Administration from London Metropolitan University, a qualification that strengthened her expertise in corporate strategy, leadership, and international finance.
A Career Built Through Global Banking
Her professional journey began at Standard Chartered Bank, where she worked in the Credit Administration Department as an Information Analyst from 1998 to 2001.
In 2004 she joined Ecobank Cameroon as a Corporate Relationship Manager. A year later she moved to Citigroup, where she served as Senior Relationship Manager and Resident Vice President until 2011. Her years at Citi exposed her to international corporate banking and complex financial transactions.
When she returned to Ecobank in 2011 she was entrusted with the responsibility of establishing a corporate banking division of international standards for Cameroon and the CEMAC region. As Head of Corporate Banking she led a division that generated nearly half of the institution’s revenue. The role involved structuring major financial deals and building relationships with large corporations, international organizations, and financial institutions across Central Africa.
Her success led to her appointment as Deputy Managing Director in 2015, where she also served as Head of Corporate and Investment Banking for Cameroon and the region.
Leadership for a New Financial Era
In 2017 Abunaw was appointed Managing Director of Ecobank Cameroon, becoming responsible for the bank’s strategy, performance, and institutional relationships.
By 2021 her responsibilities expanded when she became Cluster Head for Central Africa, overseeing several markets within the Ecobank network.
Her mandate includes achieving financial growth while maintaining prudent governance, strengthening customer confidence, and building strong relationships with governments, regulators, and financial stakeholders.
Outside the boardroom, she is a respected voice on issues shaping the future of African finance. She frequently speaks on climate finance, women’s empowerment, leadership, digital innovation, and financial inclusion.
A Mighty Woman of Cameroon
The rise of Gwendoline Abunaw reflects the story of discipline, intellect, and vision. From her academic beginnings at the University of Buea to earning an MBA from London Metropolitan University, and rising through global banking institutions, she has built a career defined by competence and quiet authority.
In the unfolding story of Cameroon’s financial leadership, she stands among the women shaping the future of the nation’s economic destiny.
Gwendoline Abunaw remains a woman deeply anchored in family values. In her home, she believes her husband is the king, a principle that reflects her strong commitment to respect, fidelity and loyalty within marriage.
Despite her demanding professional schedule, she continues to devote meaningful time to her family. She takes pride in caring for her three children, often making space in her routine to cook and nurture the household she treasures.
Beyond her professional and family responsibilities, she also participates in social gatherings, maintaining meaningful connections within her community. For Gwendoline Abunaw, success is not only measured in boardrooms, but also in the strength, harmony and devotion that define her home.
